As of July 1, 2014, home heating oil across Connecticut became cleaner and more efficient. Beginning this month, all heating oil sold statewide must have significantly less sulfur content. Sulfur content will be reduced from the current level of around 2,000 parts-per-million (ppm) on average to no more than 500 ppm. By 2018, all heating oil sold in Connecticut will be mandated to contain only 15 ppm sulfur.
The cleaner fuel is known as Ultra-Low Sulfur Heating Oil (ULSHO) and will not require any heating system upgrades from homeowners. Studies have shown that ULSHO can save customers up to 12 cents per gallon thanks to an increased efficiency in existing system, reduced need for system maintenance and increased system longevity.
